          Jerid Oases

Jerid oases

In the south-west of Tunisia, on the edge of Chott el Jerid, lifestyle determines the date palm. El Jerid, palm fan, gave the name to the edge, oases and salt marshes. Barrages of pervasive desert sands: baskets, mats-material for all this give the palm trees. About 1, 6 million trees growing on the land Chott el Jerid, 50 000 people, mainly Arabized Berbers, live by the products produced in the oases. The main chain of oases in the stretching along the salt marshes are Tozeur (35,000 inhab.) And neighboring oasis of oil (19,000 inhab.).
